THE ROGOWAY FAMILY TREE IN ALL ITS GLORY

To Download and Print out the tree in all its glory follow the instructions below. If you have trouble or don't have either a printer or the right paper e-mail me and I'll send you a hard copy.

  1. Click on the Tree and select (Netscape) "Save this image as..." or (Internet Explorer) "Download this image." This will download the image to your computer.
  2. Open the downloaded tree in any program that can open and process gif images.
  3. I tear the perforations off of standard fanfold paper. I set the paper size at "banner" or 44 inches. I use four continuous pages of fanfold paper.
  4. Another way is to use "banner" paper. Again four continuous pages should do.
  5. Try setting the reduction in (Mac) "Page Setup" or (Non-Mac) "Printer Properties" at 70%.

INTRO AND PURPOSE OF THIS WEBSITE.

My name is Raymond Rogoway. My Dad was William (Bill) Robert Rogoway and my Mom was Ziona Cantor. His Dad was Simeon Rogoway and his Mom was Rachael Cushner. Simeon's Dad was ??? and his Mom was ??? But the name "Rogoway" is a made-up name that was changed when the Simeon came over from somewhere in Eastern Europe. So the name Rogoway is unique and all of us who bare it are related. But who and where did we originally come from?

The Purpose of this web site is to:

fill in lots of blanks in the family tree.
correct errors in the family data.
find out from where and whom we really came.
and most of all, have fun as we go through our identity crisis..."I'm related to him???"

PRIVACY

Family history can be very private, very sensitive, and sometimes very scary. For example my two sons are adopted, but they know it. But there may be adopted Rogoways out there that don't know it and that needs to be respected. If you don't want to add to the tree that's ok. If you only want to add a few pieces of information and keep some private that's your right. The more you add to the database the more interesting our family becomes. I am not going to sell this information to the KGB, NSA, CIA, FBI, or (the worse one) the IRS. Just remember that this is a public web site and your nosy Mother-in-Law has access too.

JUST WHAT WAS OUR NAME?

A few of us spell our American name Rogawayor Ragaway. I have picked up at least two different versions of our Ukrainian name (1) ROGOVOY AND RUGOFOI. Simon's naturalization paper shows the name Rugofoi but this could have been the Deputy's interpretation of Rogovoy (Rugofoi/Rogovoy-pretty close). Contridicting the Rugofoi spelling is a family that came over in 1991 from the Ukraine and settled in Mephis who spell it Rogovoy. One report is that the name was (English transliteration) ROGOV-VOY and the two V's were put together. Rugofoi certainly does not look Ukrainian but does look like an English transliteration of a Ukrainian name. Which is correct? So far the evidence points to Rogovoy.
Just for fun I've transliterated various pronounciations of our name below. It's a letter-for-letter translation so it's close but not exact.

WHAT I THINK I KNOW ABOUT US

The following information is mostly second-hand. I have not verified most of it with official documentation. I doubt that much exists. Some immigration data may exist but I don't even know the original Port of Entry. If you have information that differs with what follows please let me know.

  • Simon Rogoway married Rachael Cushner prior to emmigating to the US.
  • They resided in or around Kiev in the Ukraine. (Note: I visited Kiev in 1980 and 1988. The city has expanded over most of the surrounding villages.)
  • That region of the Ukraine has shifted between Poland and the Ukraine many times. There are cities in Poland with the name of or beginning with Rogo.
  • The Rogoway family had a habit of "adopting" people into the family who had no biological connection including, I believe, at least one Italian.
  • Their entry into the US seems to be sometime between 1877 and 1879. They traveled to Oregon stopping for around 10 years (1877-1889) in the Dakota Territories arriving in Portland around 1889 to 1892.
  • There is a tale that they accidently left one child behind in the Dakotas.
  • My dad said that the Simon and Rachael had a habit of swapping birthdates of their children so that the girls would be younger!
